Insider Forecasts a Twist for Yankees’ Projected $540 Million Free Agent Target

The New York Yankees have just begun 2024 with outfielder Juan Soto on the roster. While there is still an entire regular season (and postseason) left before he enters free agency in November,

many are already speculating on which team he will sign with for a large sum of money.

On March 30, Jon Heyman of the New York Post described how Soto fits wonderfully in New York. He also wondered aloud whether he would spend the next decade or so in the Bronx or Queens.

"And unless something unexpected happens — and in free agency, I guess you never know — the guess here is that he will be enjoyed by New Yorkers for the next decade, maybe decade and a half," he went on to say.

"If I were a betting guy — and as we all know, betting isn't popular in baseball — I'd say he's a New Yorker for life. The real question might be which borough he will work in."

Heyman concluded his thoughts by predicting a potential twist in the outfielder's eagerly anticipated free agency.

"At this rate, the Yankees cannot let him go. However, if he does leave, the Mets are only eight miles south and east in Queens.

The Athletic's Tim Britton estimated that Soto could sign a 14-year contract worth $540 million. The Mets have been connected to Soto several times in recent months. According to SNY's Andy Martino, it's too early to know what Soto's free-agent market will look like.
